Soho is a neighborhood in Manhattan bordered by the West Village, Chinatown, and the Lower East Side. The name is used to describe the area "South of Houston", from Houston street to Grand street and Broadway to 6th avenue. Originally a neighborhood occupied by artists throughout the 1960s and 70s who were attracted to the inexpensive rents and loft spaces of abandoned factories, Soho eventually became the center of the contemporary art world in the late 1970s. The neighborhood remained the primary contemporary art gallery district until the mid-1990s when significant rent increases forced many galleries to relocate to Chelsea.
