The Pompidou Center was conceived from French President Georges Pompidou's (b.1911 - d.1974) original vision of a contemporary interdisciplinary cultural institution with public libraries, auditoriums, film venues, a music institute, and a public piazza. The functionalist building constructed by the architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers between 1971 and 1977, has become as well known for its exterior with its revealed structure as it has for its collections.
