The Museum located in the the center of the Marais on a small street leading to the Seine river is set in two buildings (see above): in the Hôtel de Cantobre built in 1706 and in architect Yves Lion's 1984 more contemporary cement structure.

Ever since the city of Paris began to invest in the preservation and expansion of its photographic collection in 1983 and in the sponsorship of emerging photographers, this institution has become important to the world of visual culture. The collection begins with and is highly influenced by Robert Frank's 1953 book "The Americans".
In addition to exhibition spaces, the center has one of the largest libraries of books, videos, and audios on photography.(read less)
