Lazarides' Gallery front in Soho
Courtesy of Isango Blog
Since 2006 the manager of Banksy, Steve Lazarides, who started in car resale, opened this gallery it has become the primary source of original artworks and prints by Banksy, Faile, Conor Harrington, Invader, Ben Turnbull, 3D, Jonathan Yeo, Lucy McLauchlan, Zevs and JR to name but a few. Having operated for many years outside of the ‘conventional gallery system’, the staff still tries to remain as unconventional as street art praises itself to be. For example they try to defy categorizations of graffiti, graphics or street art by calling their artists photographers, sculptors, agent provocateurs or taxidermists and comparing their school to that of the Art Brut movement, in which many weren't formally trained and drew heavily upon their own imaginations and popular culture. They also have various venues or mediums with which to present the works they sell. Indeed now a four part enterprise Lazarides has two 'normal' galleries in London’s Soho and in Newcastle, an interactive website and blog and finally a new space at Charing Cross Road that consists of the Print Room (also selling many three-dimensional and sculptural pieces), and a ground-level space 121 Charing Cross, showing a permanently revolving group show.(read less)
