It is world-beating for the International Film Festival, for the International Art Exhibition, and for the International Architecture Exhibition, and continues the great tradition of the Festival of Contemporary Music, the Theatre Festival, now flanked by the Festival of Contemporary Dance.

The Giardini della Biennale in the east of Venice have been the traditional venue for the International Art Exhibition since 1895. The area hosts the Palazzo delle Esposizioni and 29 national pavilions, built at various periods by the participating countries themselves. Set amidst tall trees, the pavilions themselves form a sort of anthology of important twentieth-century architecture - given they were designed by renowned architects such as Aalto, Hoffmann, Rietveld, Scarpa, and Stirling.
