Press Release
This mural is located at the corner of Houston and Bowery Streets in New York City.
Goldman Properties and Deitch Projects are pleased to announce a new project by Os Gemeos for the wall at the corner of Houston Street and Bowery, made famous by Keith Haring’s 1982 mural. In recognition of the 50th anniversary of Keith Haring’s birth, Keith Haring’s 1982 mural was recreated last fall as the first project in an ongoing mural program for the wall. Os Gemeos, the influential street artists from Brazil, were chosen to produce the second mural project.
The mural will blend ideas from the artist’s daily life with the fantasy or “ludico” world where the recognizable is harmonically blended with the abstract. The work will convey their vision of day-to-day life, simple scenes that are sensually rich. The artists are interested in what lies inside of people, beneath the surface. Characters are often seen emerging from hiding places and trap doors with secret moments to discover. They are influenced by folklore and music culture, creating characters that are reflections of both local customs and the urban sprawl which mimic the contradictions of the world around them. However in their words, “we only report scenes from a magic, love and real place that live inside us, a real dream, the scene of our own universe.”
The property on which the mural wall is located has been owned by Goldman Properties since 1984. Tony Goldman has given his enthusiastic support to this project.
