Sophie Calle is a conceptual artist who uses photography, writing, and installation to investigate the paradox between our private selves and our public lives. Exploring the concepts of identity and intimacy, she often involves herself and the viewer, sometimes unknowingly, in the process.

Since the 1970s, she has been known for her unconventional methods of obtaining materials and subjects to work with such as: posing as a chamber maid in a hotel to gain access to the personal belongings of the guests; following a man she met at a party in Paris to Venice and documenting his daily life in photographs for two weeks; or having her mother hire a private detective to follow her around Paris and take photographs of her as he remained unaware of her involvement.

Calle's work has been exhibited internationally including at the Venice Biennale, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the TATE, and White Cube Gallery. She exhibits with Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris and Paula Cooper Gallery in New York.
